Construction for the Northwest Garden project is moving forward on schedule. Test piles measuring the integrity of the foundation were successful, and as evidenced by the photos shown below, construction has begun.

Staff is working diligently alongside our construction team to ensure that every detail is met for the new Memory Care Center, Assisted Living, and Independent Living residences. In the meantime, we thought it would be interesting to share some progress photos directly from the construction site.

These photos depict the construction site before and after the demolition of the Cooling Tower, the removal of the North Garden second-floor balconies (which will be incorporated into the new building), and resident construction viewings in N-313. Please stay tuned for continued progress updates.

The years of 2012 to the present represent a time of extreme growth and forward vision for Plymouth Harbor. Not only did Plymouth Harbor implement programs and practices that would best serve its current residents, both now and into the future, but the community also looked at the needs and services desired by future residents. Thinking of both today and tomorrow, Plymouth Harbor began drafting plans for a new building that would feature additional assisted and independent living units as well as a memory care center (now known as the Northwest Garden Building). In addition, in 2012, the Plymouth Harbor Foundation was established to further ensure the stewardship of funds contributed to Plymouth Harbor.

Picture6Restorative care is a term that is often misunderstood or incorrectly defined as rehabilitation therapy. And while therapy and restorative nursing complement each other, they are not one and the same.

The purpose of restorative care is to maintain a person’s highest level of physical, mental, and psychosocial function in order to prevent declines that impact quality of life. In the Smith Care Center (SCC), restorative care is a part of every aspect of a resident’s daily life. Care includes, but is not limited to: range of motion (active or passive), ambulation, dining assistance, locomotion or wheelchair use, fall prevention, our Sit-to- Stand program, and more.

In addition to therapies, the restorative team also addresses residents’ many adaptive devices, such as skin protectors, night lights, chair pad alarms, and pendants. While not every SCC resident receives this service, since January 2016, an average of 58 percent of our residents benefitted from restorative care.

How exactly does the process work?

There is no set path that leads to restorative care. However, most residents receive it after therapy determines that they have reached their maximum potential. Following this determination, the therapist develops a resident’s restorative care plan and shares it with the Restorative Nurse, Lauren Krause, who ultimately implements the program. From there, it is the restorative care team’s job to retain the resident’s ability level. Restorative aides help to provide the care, follow through on programs, and track and report any changes.

How is SCC’s Restorative Care Team different?

Most skilled nursing facilities teach their staff some form of restorative care, and all employees on the floor are tasked with providing this care. However, SCC is unique in that we have a dedicated team that specializes in restorative care and works closely with the therapy department. “The communication between our department and therapy is really amazing,” Lauren says.

Additionally, while Medicare specifies that restorative care programs run at least six days per week, the Smith Care Center offers its residents seven days per week. Lauren leads the program alongside her team of restorative aides — Dennis Ortiz, Sheila Strahorn, and Nancy Chan (not pictured). What do medicine, Chicago, and Africa have in common? Paul and Macky Groen.

Paul Groen, M.D. is a graduate of Wheaton College near Chicago, where he was born. He went on to attend Baylor University College of Medicine and took his residency in Detroit. Macky (short for Maxine) graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and received her R.N. from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. She also went on to earn a Master’s degree at Columbia University’s Teachers College.

It wasn’t until 1964, however, that the two met — in Africa. That year, Dr. Groen arrived at Mkar Christian Hospital in northern Nigeria, and by chance, Macky was the director of the nursing school. By 1965, the two were married. Eventually, the couple moved back to the states with their two sons, where Dr. Groen not only went on to study orthopedic surgery, establish a private practice in Wheaton, and teach at Loyola Medical School, but he also founded Doctors on Call for Services (DOCS). DOCS arranges for specialists to travel, on their own dime, and teach African doctors in their fields of expertise.

For the first time, Plymouth Harbor is able to offer Workplace English to our primarily Spanish-speaking employees, as part of our OnBoard Employee Wellness Program. The course is administered by State College of Florida’s Workplace Education program.

The classes are 2 hours per week for 10 weeks, and will be offered here on the campus of Plymouth Harbor for the convenience of our employees who wish to participate. At the end of the 10 week course, which runs March 1st through May 3rd, participants will receive a certificate of completion. This course is made possible through gifts to the Plymouth Harbor Foundation.

The years of 2007—2011 represent a smaller period of growth for Plymouth Harbor, as we geared up for major developments to take place in 2012 and beyond. In 2007, the Smith Care Center secured approval to open our beds to the community at large. This same year, Plymouth Harbor embarked upon a 36-month Capital Improvement Project that helped provide improvements to the infrastructure of the campus. Plymouth Harbor also expanded in areas of community outreach, dining services, and resident wellness activities.

Lee DeLieto, Sr., Trustee

“My involvement and appreciation of the composition and dedication of the Plymouth Harbor, Inc. Board of Trustees motivated me to accept an invitation to become a member of the Plymouth Harbor Foundation Board of Trustees.”

Lee DeLieto, Sr. joined the Commercial Group at Michael Saunders & Company more than 20 years ago and he and his partner, Lee Jr., have repeatedly received the “Top Commercial Real Estate Team” recognition. Lee is an active member of various professional organizations including member and Past President of The Commercial Investment Division (CID) of the Sarasota Association of Realtors, member of Sarasota Association of Realtors and the International Council of Shopping Centers.

Lee’s community involvement includes Founder and Board Member of Insignia Bank, and current Board Member and Past Chair of Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. Additionally, Lee is a Past President of the Downtown Sarasota Kiwanis Club, Past Board Chair of the Sarasota University Club, and Past President of the Sarasota Alumni Club of Phi Delta Theta. Lee received a Bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and an MBA from the Sloan School of Management at the University of Rochester.

 

From traveling around the world to winning a gold medal in the Arthur Murray dance competition, Kansas City, Missouri, natives Phil and Barry Starr have lived an exiting life together.

In addition to his passion for videography and recording our monthly Insights presentations, Phil held a long and successful career in the insurance business. He graduated from Princeton, earned his MBA at Wharton, and became a certified life underwriter. He joined the Army and retired with a captain’s rank. From there, he went on to R. B. Jones Insurance Brokers in Kansas City, and took the company public before retiring after 36 years.

Barry graduated from Smith College, and having studied in Paris for a year, she tutored in French. She also served in many community positions — as a library board member, an art gallery docent, a church volunteer, and a Junior League officer.
