Plymouth Harbor Introduces Robotic Pets for Starr Memory Care Residents to Promote Connection

SARASOTA, FL – Plymouth Harbor on Sarasota Bay recently hosted a pet adoption fair featuring Joy For All Companion Pets at the Starr Memory Care Residences. Sponsored by the Plymouth Harbor Foundation, the initiative provided memory care residents with a lifetime companion without the challenges of live animal care.
During the adoption fair, residents selected their choice of cat or dog, complete with adoption certificates and celebratory photos. The experience allowed residents living with cognitive decline to “adopt” lifelike robotic pets to be housed in their residences for continued comfort and connection. Families and caregivers joined in the celebration, sharing meaningful moments alongside their loved ones.
“It is profoundly moving to see our memory care residents respond so positively to these companions,” said Alexandra Maliwacki, Chief Operating Officer at Plymouth Harbor. “While they may not be living animals, their ability to evoke joy and emotional connection demonstrates the power of innovation in enhancing quality of life for our community.”
Research suggests that robotic pets can serve as companions to alleviate agitation and combat loneliness in individuals living with cognitive decline. Robotic pets mimic the qualities of live animals, featuring soft fur, comforting sounds, and reactive touch and movement mechanics. They can offer numerous benefits, such as evoking positive memories, promoting a sense of routine or self, and enhancing overall mood.
The pet adoption fair reflects Plymouth Harbor and the Plymouth Harbor Foundation’s ongoing commitment to innovation that supports dignity and meaningful connections in senior living.
